Eric Ming was an athlete, artist, musician, cyclist, comedian, coach, friend, brother, son, mentor, youth worker...an overall great human!

Eric's passion was people and basketball. As a Strathcona Coach, his resume included 10 Real Basketball League Championships, 3 Steve Nash Provincial Championships and 3 Consecutive Night Hoops Championships. Eric also reached out and introduced the game to thousands of children through his camps, clinics, play days and special events.

A graduate of Britannia Community Secondary School where he was Student Council President and Most Inspirational Player, Eric came back to coach the Bantam Boys to their first City Championship in 2008 and was an assistant coach to the 2010 Senior Boys who brought home the AA Provincial Championship Banner.

Eric was one of the original founders and coach of the Vancouver Strathcona Men's Basketball Team who successfully made the North American Chinese Basketball International Tournament Finals 4 times. He was the glue that brought together an all-star men's team to Minneapolis, Fort Lauderdale, Montreal and Dallas; placing second in 2012 & 2014 and winning the coveted Open Championships in 2013 & 2016.

Eric found time to enter college where he graduated with high honours from the Langara Recreation Management Program. Eric became a Youth Worker and the MoreSports Inner-City Hub Coordinator within the Strathcona, RayCam and Britannia neighbourhoods. As a youth worker, he mentored hundreds of young men and women who are now amazing leaders in their community. Through MoreSports, Eric offered exciting, safe, inclusive programs after-school in 5 Inner City Schools. Eric's natural ability to engage with all children enabled him to work with special need children as a Childcare Worker. Eric's last program at Strathcona CC was a Youth Community Kitchen which addressed hunger and nutritional issues for 25-30 participants every Friday night.

Eric accomplished all of this while battling cancer for 11 years.

Eric influenced countless lives through his work. He acted as a role model, fighting in the face of adversity and never giving up hope. His example inspired those around him to be the best they can be and to have a positive impact on those around them. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy and example lives on in the hearts and minds of the people he touched.

“You realize the things that are important are the things that you leave behind. And the things that you leave behind is how you treat others, how you affect your community, and how you support the ones that you love.”
